Meeting location
Meet us at 395 Fort Washington Avenue, 1 block away from 175st subway station
Popolopen Torne, officially called “The Torne,” is a small mountain with a relatively sharp and bald peak, part of the Hudson Highlands, with a summit 942 feet above sea level. It is located in Bear Mountain State Park and has 360° views, with the Hudson River and the Bear Mountain Bridge to the east, the hills of the West Point Military Reservation to the west and Bear Mountain to the south. You will meet your guide and your group 1 block away from 175st subway station and we will hit the road direction Harriman State Park. Our Escape driver will drop us at the trailhead. We will start our ascent right away, all the way to the top of the Torne (1 mile). This is a challenging climb, we will use our hands and the cords left along the way.
The top has panoramic views, plus a great tribute and memorial to our US military, specifically focused on those that have fought, as well as have made the ultimate sacrifice, in Afghanistan, Iraq and the broader middle eastern theater of war. The memorial consists of memorial benches, plaques, and a rock cairn listing the names of those brave military men and women. We will continue our adventure, going down the mountain. There is a short but challenging section of rock scrambling: be ready to use your full efforts, scrambling on the way down.We will cross a beautiful river on a wooden bridge and will have our picnic right next to the river, enjoying the peace and beauty of the forest. Rested and full we will continue east on the Popolopen Gorge trail which is a nice narrow trail that follows mostly along the Popolopen Creek. We may see some wild turkeys! Finally, we will make it to the near-end where there is a nice waterfall and lookout point.n
What we will do:Our driver is gonna meet us right next to the beautiful Bear Mountain Bridge.
